How to Use the Stain Color Visualizer

Click any color chip to see it applied to the sample deck. Browse the semi-transparent wood tones for a natural look, or the solid colors for full, opaque coverage. The selected color name and hex value show below the preview. Colors are on-screen approximations — the real result shifts with your wood species, the number of coats and how weathered the boards are.

Semi-Transparent vs. Solid Stain

Semi-transparent stain lets the wood grain show through and suits newer redwood, cedar and hardwood. It soaks in, so it will not peel, but it fades faster and needs a fresh coat every 2 to 3 years. Solid stain covers the grain completely with a paint-like finish that hides age and gray, lasts longer on older decks, but can peel if water gets under it. On badly weathered boards, solid is usually the smarter choice.

Which reacts best to stain

  • Redwood and cedar take semi-transparent tones beautifully.
  • IPE and dense hardwoods need a penetrating oil, not a film stain.
  • Pressure-treated pine should dry for a few months before its first coat.
  • Composite and PVC are never stained — the color is built in.

Choosing a Stain Color for San Diego

San Diego sun is hard on finishes, so lighter, UV-resistant tones hold their color longer than dark ones on a west-facing deck. Warm honey and cedar tones read well against stucco and coastal light, while grays and solids suit modern homes. If you live in an HOA in La Jolla, Carmel Valley or Rancho Santa Fe, check for an approved color list before you buy. Once you pick a favorite here, bring it to your free estimate and we will match it on your actual boards. We also handle full deck staining and refinishing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use semi-transparent or solid stain?

Choose semi-transparent to show the wood grain on newer redwood or cedar; choose solid to cover grain and hide age on older, weathered decks.

How long does deck stain last in San Diego?

Semi-transparent stain lasts about 2 to 3 years in San Diego sun; solid stain lasts longer but can peel if water gets underneath.

What is the best stain color for redwood?

Warm, semi-transparent honey and natural tones let redwood's color show while adding UV protection. Lighter tones hold up best against San Diego sun.

Can you stain a composite deck?

No. Composite and PVC boards are never stained; their color is manufactured in. Only real wood takes stain.
